What is a dividend yield calculator?

A dividend yield calculator calculates the percentage return a stock or ETF pays in dividends relative to price. Enter annual dividend and current price to compare income potential across holdings quickly.

The dividend yield formula

Dividend Yield = (Annual Dividend per Share ÷ Current Share Price) × 100

This converts dividends into a comparable percentage. A $2 dividend on a $50 stock is the same 4% yield as a $4 dividend on a $100 stock.

How to calculate dividend yield in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Annualize the dividend (monthly × 12, quarterly × 4).
  2. Step 2: Use the latest share price.
  3. Step 3: Divide annual dividend by price and multiply by 100.

$1.00 annual ÷ $210 × 100 = 0.48%

VYM

$3.50 annual ÷ $125 × 100 = 2.80%

VOO & SPY

Dividend yield calculator — FAQ

How do I calculate dividend yield?

Divide the annual dividend per share by the current share price, then multiply by 100 to get a percentage. For example, a $4 annual dividend on a $100 stock is a 4% yield.

What's the difference between dividend yield and dividend payout ratio?

Dividend yield uses stock price and shows income return. Payout ratio uses earnings and shows sustainability. Use both before investing.

Can dividend yield be negative?

No. Since annual dividend and share price are non-negative, dividend yield cannot be negative.

What is a good dividend yield?

There is no single number. Around 2%–4% is common for diversified equity ETFs, while covered-call and specialty income funds can run higher.

How do I calculate dividend yield for an ETF like SCHD, VYM, or VOO?

Use the same formula as stocks: annual distribution divided by price. For fund comparisons, also check 30-day SEC yield.

Does the calculator support monthly ETFs like JEPQ?

Yes. Select Monthly and enter the monthly distribution. The calculator annualizes automatically.

What is yield on cost?

Yield on cost is annual dividend divided by your original purchase price. It reflects your personal return.

What's a forward dividend yield?

Forward yield annualizes the latest payment to estimate the next 12 months. Trailing yield uses the prior 12 months of payouts.
